What Makes a Good Photography Studio?

Wondering what separates a good photography studio from a bad one? Well, then you’ve come to the right place.

If your home studio isn’t cutting it anymore or you don’t have space at home, renting a professional studio is an excellent idea. It can really take your photos to the next level and make your photography business more credible. But not every studio is going to be the perfect fit for you.

Keep reading to learn what makes a great rental photography studio.

Provided Equipment

If you don’t own the right equipment or don’t wish to rent it, you’ll need to find a studio that will provide it for you.

For example, this Photography Studio Rental provides you with “photo, lighting, and electrical equipment right on-site”. Their website makes this clear, but don’t be afraid to ask if your studio doesn’t make it clear on their website.

If they do provide you with some equipment, double-check that they have everything you need. If you require fog machines, a variety of backdrops, light modifiers, or strobe lights, they may not have it.

You should also consider bringing back up rental equipment just in case the person before you broke anything. The last thing you want is to show up with a client and see a ripped backdrop.

Studio Location

The studio you choose should be relatively close, easily accessible, and in a safe area.

If you’re planning on driving your equipment over yourself, there should also be ample parking space. But if you’re getting the equipment dropped off, make sure there’s a space near the studio where you can unload everything. You should also ask the studio if they will provide a dolly or extra hands for bringing in heavier equipment.

Studio Space

The studio should be the correct size for your shoot. And if you plan on having multiple shoots going at once, ensure that the studio space is large enough to accommodate it.

You should also consider the lighting and how you need the space to function for you. Do you need natural lighting or drapes to cover the windows? Do you need tall ceilings to achieve the best lighting?

And if you have the option, tour the space beforehand to make sure everything is exactly as advertised. But if that’s not an option, look at pictures of the space beforehand.

Model Accommodations

If you’re shooting non-living subjects, you won’t have to worry about this one.

But if you work with models, you’ll want to ask if there are changing rooms for them with mirrors and proper lighting. You should also ask if the studio space is temperature-controlled, ensuring that the models are comfortable throughout the shoot.

Find the Best Photography Studio for You

Once you find the right photography studio, your business will take off in no time. Just be sure that it has everything you require to take the best photos possible. And at the end of the day, it’s all a transaction, so don’t be afraid to ask for what you need.
