Pregnancy

Our doctors provide full obstetric care for expectant women and their babies, from preconception through delivery. Our maternity care team will closely monitor you throughout your pregnancy to identify potential health problems and pre-existing conditions that might arise during your pregnancy. After you deliver, we’ll take care of postnatal exams, regular checkups and vaccinations until your baby is a year old.

Fertility

Female fertility usually starts to decline after age 35, but it is possible to get pregnant until menopause. Fertility treatments such as IVF are available if you have infertility problems.

 Female health issues

Conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) can lead to irregular periods and heavy or absent periods. More serious issues like endometriosis or uterine fibroids can be treated at Gold Coast Womens Health Centre through medicine and surgery.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a gynaecological disorder that affects 6-10% of women of reproductive age. It occurs when tissue similar to that which lines your uterus (called endometrium) grows outside of it. The most common sites for endometriosis are on your ovaries, in your lower pelvis and on your Fallopian tubes and vagina. If you’re experiencing symptoms such as pelvic pain, painful or irregular periods or heavy periods, talk to Gold Coast Women’s Medical Centre about a simple diagnostic test we can perform called a laparoscopy; it has made diagnosis more straightforward than ever before.

Colposcopy

An experienced doctor carefully examines your cervix with a magnifying instrument called a colposcope during a colposcopy. The doctor will use acetic acid (also known as vinegar) to highlight abnormalities or precancerous changes to cervical cells so that they can identify any areas that might need to be biopsied. During a biopsy, cells are removed from suspicious areas of your cervix and sent to a lab for testing. If any abnormal cells are found during the procedure, they’ll be tested for cancer. Colposcopy is generally used after you have abnormal Pap tests but might also be recommended if you develop symptoms like bleeding between periods, unusual discharge or frequent pain during sex.

Menopause

The transition from regular monthly periods to a permanent cessation of menses. Most women who experience menopause are between 45 and 55 years old, but perimenopause symptoms can begin as early as age 35. Symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, night sweats, and irregular periods.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

At gold coast womens health Centre, we can test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes and human papillomavirus (HPV) if you are experiencing symptoms of an STI. All our doctors have postgraduate training in sexual health, and you will have a consultation with one of our doctors before your test is done. If you have had unprotected sex or more than one partner in the last 12 months, there is an increased risk that you may have an STI, so it is important to get tested at least every year. We use rapid testing technology so that results are available on-the-spot.
