Giving birth for the first time can be quite scary and it takes a lot of preparation, both mental and physical. After all, pregnancy and childbirth can be uncomfortable but the pain and discomfort which await you in the delivery room can’t even compare. However, there are some things you can do to make labor easier on you and your baby. Here are five practical tips that are sure to help you get ready for the delivery.

Stay positive

Some women have had a terrible labor experience and believe that every woman has to go through the same hell. Not because they’re mean, but because they don’t know any better. But don’t forget that these are just pessimistic stories and that your labor can be a lovely experience. Moreover, negative thoughts may make labor more difficult at best, and can even make it more painful at worst.

If you find yourself feeling uncomfortable by the way someone talks about pregnancy, you may change the TV channel, tune out, or walk away from a conversation. You can even limit your social media time to avoid seeing disturbing labor-related posts.

Practice mindfulness and meditation

The positive effects of meditation have long been recognized. Pregnancy and childbirth can be made more comfortable for both mother and child through the practice of meditation. You’ll learn to handle stressful circumstances more calmly if you meditate often which is beneficial for both you and your newborn. When it comes to reducing anxiety and stress, meditation is the safest and most effective non-pharmacological method to do it. It is by the mother’s hormones that the fetus is reassured that they’re safe.

Meditation reduces the stress chemicals called cortisol and adrenaline and sends a signal to the developing baby that it is protected and secure. Furthermore, our pleasure hormone, endorphin, is produced during meditation, which is known to relieve pain during labor.

Join a birthing class

As soon as possible, sign up for a birthing class. Even if you think these classes aren’t important they’ll help you meet other expecting parents. Having people around you who are going through a similar situation can be truly helpful, especially if this is your first time experiencing pregnancy. They can be a real supporting system and people you can always rely on. Of course, during these classes, you’ll learn firsthand what to expect in different stages of childbirth and how to take care of your newborn. Don’t be shy to ask any questions that come to mind.

You may be interested to know about the benefits of organic baby formula, or how to set up the crib. All questions are valid. Likewise, the more you know about what awaits you, the smoother your labor will go. When you go to the hospital, you don’t want to go there with no concept of what will take place. Remember, no surprise is pleasant after labor has already begun.

Book a relaxing massage session

The last thing you need during childbirth is more pressure. However, the tension you’ll feel during labor can be relieved by a gentle touch. Your brain’s feel-good chemicals are released during a massage. Getting your neck massaged or even your feet might help you focus on anything other than the contractions. There are three specific methods that may be used by your spouse or a doula. They may press down on your tailbone to help you relax, either with his palm or a tennis ball. If this sounds like too much pressure, you may ask them to gently caress your shoulders and back.

The third option is to press your pelvis. This is done by your partner standing behind you and placing both hands on your hips. They should be pulling back with each contraction. This movement may assist in expanding your pelvis and therefore quicker labor.

Share your concerns

Let your doctor know if you’re scared, and they may have some suggestions on how to alleviate your stress. Consider a new doctor if your current doctor doesn’t seem to be listening to you or if you notice they lack empathy. Being in a comfortable environment while giving birth should be your top priority. Also, no topics should be off-limits. If you’re concerned with getting your baby weight off, or if you’re afraid you won’t produce enough milk, you should feel comfortable speaking up and seeking advice.

Final thoughts

Delivery can be a horrifying experience for new mothers, especially when they don’t know what’s in store during labor. However, if you follow the tips above, you’ll be prepared and ready to welcome your baby into the world. We hope that your childbirth will go as smoothly as possible and without any complications.
