As part of national smile month 2022, a survey revealed nearly 30% declared that they had shared their toothbrush at least on one occasion. Perhaps they thought it wasn’t a big deal to do so, but the reality is that sharing toothbrushes is extremely harmful to one’s health and can lead to issues such as gum disease.
Additionally, according to oral care experts, failing to regularly change toothbrushes can expose teeth to cavities or bacteria and be detrimental to someone’s oral health.
People should not use the same toothbrush for over three months because the bristles will no longer be effective in cleaning areas around the teeth that contain plaque.
Following research, it was detected that it was approximately 40 days before the bristles start to flare up. Failing to remove plaque effectively will then contribute to medical conditions developing, such as heart infections and dementia.

Oral Care Routine
To prevent gum disease from occurring, people need to maintain a good oral care routine.
People must ensure they use good fluoride toothpaste and therapeutic mouthwash. Also, clean water and soft-bristled toothbrushes will help protect their gums and keep them healthy.
Healthy and proportional meals contribute to oral health. Many meals, especially sugary ones, aid plaque buildup that can contribute to gum disease or tooth decay. These meals can also affect your enamel and increase the development of cavities.
This doesn’t mean healthy meals can’t affect you’re your teeth, they usually contain less acidic substances that can wreak havoc in your mouth.
People who smoke are likely to produce bacterial plaques in their mouths, which could lead to gum disease. Because of the lack of proper oxygen levels in the bloodstream, infected gums find it hard to heal.
Get a Water-Flossing System
Flossing systems will make your mouth rinses and toothpaste effective. When people brush and floss as often as they should, the chances of getting gingivitis will be very low.
Medical Checkups and Regular Dental Visits

Due to the painless symptoms associated with gum disease, it is hard for people to realise what is going on in their mouths and if left unchecked, gum tissues will deteriorate.
But this won’t be a cause for concern if people frequently brush their teeth, avoid sharing toothbrushes with other people, and regularly change their brush and don’t use the same one for more than three months.
