When you’re dealing with a poly skin hair replacement system, it’s not completely surprising if you end up with a tear or a hole — especially if you’re a beginner. In this blog, we will guide you on how to fix these tears and holes.

Keep in mind that this is only a temporary solution that works for small holes or tears. It is recommended that you order a new toupee hair system while you use your temporarily-fixed hairpiece in the meantime.

What supplies you will need

  • Styrofoam head
  • Pins
  • Liquid polyurethane
  • Acetone or nail polish remover
  • Paper towels
  • Blow dryer
  • Scissors
  • Clear repair tape
  • Surgical tape

Note

This guide is only for repairing small tears or holes in poly skin hair systems or systems that use a poly perimeter. This does not apply to lace or monofilament. Additionally, make sure to clean your base and let it dry before following this procedure.

Step 1: Secure your hair system

Secure your system onto a styrofoam head making sure that the underside of the base is facing up. Use pins for further security by placing them around the perimeter of the system, but not through the poly skin perimeter.

Once that is done, smooth and flatten the area that has your tear and/or hole using your hands. Using acetone or your nail polish remover, clean this particular area. If hair is in the way, tape it down using your surgical tape.

Step 2: Apply tape

Take some clear repair tape and place it above the tear or hole. Make sure the piece of tape you’ve used is slightly bigger than the tear or hole and press firmly.

Step 3: Apply liquid polyurethane

Take your liquid polyurethane and apply one layer above the tape. Remember to brush the liquid beyond the tape’s edges.

Step 4: Start drying

Once that’s done, dry the patch or area using your blow dryer for a couple of minutes. Preferably use the lowest setting or cold setting if possible. After that, let the area air dry overnight.

Step 5: Prepare for attachment

Once your poly system has dried overnight, it’s time to attach it again. If the affected area is where you normally apply your wig tape or liquid adhesive, it’s completely fine to apply over it once it’s fully dry. Once that’s done, simply attach it and you’re good to go!

Conclusion

If you require a new attachment of your fixed hair system afterwards, remove the tape patch and clean your base. Then follow the steps above and apply a new patch. If you do not have access to clear repair tape, you can always just use liquid polyurethane. However, you should note that applying it directly onto the affected area could cause it to become a bit bumpy.

Again, this is only a temporary solution for your poly skin toupee if you have no other backup system. It is heavily recommended to order a new hair system while you make do with your fixed poly system.
