Looking after your eyes is something that needs to be done throughout life. To keep yourself able to work hard, and enjoy your time off, you need to maintain good eye health. While some eye problems can be down to genetics, and even the passing of time, others can be caused via poor health and care, even at a younger age. The earlier you start protecting your eyes, the less likely it may be that you are plagued with problems as you grow older.

Styes

While styes can occur in people of any age, those who have diabetes, or skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis may be more inclined to suffer. A stye on top eyelid may cause a lot of irritation, as well as soreness and discomfort. As you age, your skin becomes more fragile and potentially sensitive. While styes do not usually cause any long term health problems, it is best to still avoid them. This can be achieved by making sure the eyes, and skin around them, are kept clean of any build-ups of dirt or makeup, and you avoid touching the eye area as much as possible, unless it is necessary.

Cataracts

This eye problem, often seen in older people, is caused by a cloudy layer over the lens of the eye. Over time, this can lead to blurred and distorted vision, as well as a general feeling like everything is fairly dark. One of the ways to repair this, is through an operation on the lens of the eye, removing the cataracts. It is important to note that it can occur in both eyes, so you may require more than one operation. Some lifestyle choices, such as smoking, can also increase the likelihood of you developing cataracts, so smokers are advised to quit as soon as possible, amongst the other health concerns this habit produces.

Dry Eyes

For those over the age of 50, having dry eyes can be a real problem. When the eyes do not produce enough tears to lubricate themselves, they can become sensitive, feel gritty, and itch. There are ways that you can try to limit this as a problem, including having a good sleep schedule, monitoring your use of computers and other screens, and even switching from contact lenses to glasses to give your eyes a much-needed break. You can also get hold of special eye drops, formulated to help lubricate the eyes again, to try and bring a bit of normality back into your life. Ageing doesn’t necessarily have to mean a permanent decline in your vision, as well as your enjoyment of life. Instead, by educating yourself on the likely problems that may arise, you can take steps to try and prevent them from occurring, as well as be more proactive if you notice something that doesn’t look or feel right. Considering the amount that we rely on our eyes each day, it is very important that they are looked after, with the level of care and attention that they deserve.
