Several data suggest that there has been an increase in infertility in India

Senior Obstetrician-Gynecologist and IVF expert Dr. Gautam Allahbadia has said that there can be many factors that can lead to infertility in men and women. On the issue of rising infertility in India, he has suggested that changing trends in the Indian economy and altering lifestyle have been some of the prominent reasons behind the rise of infertility.

“Almost 30 crore men and women suffer from infertility in India. Changing lifestyle, improper intake of food, consumption of alcohol, and smoking are classified as some of the leading factors that can impact the ability to reproduce in both men and women,” says Gautam Allahbadia.

Rising infertility in India has been the major cause of concern as one out of every five Indians experiences complexities in conceiving.

“Historically, a lot of stigmas were largely associated with women in case of infertility. There were abused and disgraced for not being able to conceive. However, it has been evident that men in large numbers are infertile. Moreover, it is relatively difficult to diagnose men over women in case of fertility.”

“There can be many causes that can cause infertility in men that include infections, vasa deferens absence, retrograde ejaculation, varicoceles, etc. In women, age, issues in the fallopian tube, and endometriosis amongst others are some of the known causes for infertility,” says Dr. Gautam Allahbadia.

He also said that consuming alcohol and smoking hurts fertility in both men and women. Excessive intake of alcohol causes a decline in sperm count in men whereas smoking can cause miscarriages in women. The rise in the population that smoke has created a serious concern that can also enhance infertility caseloads in India.

“Other than smoking and alcohol, living an unhealthy lifestyle also a matter of concern. Today, when most of the food whether processed or raw are adulterated, we have been exposed to dangerous chemicals and heavy metals that are causing infertility,” says Dr. Gautam Allahbadia.
