Guide to IELTS Writing Test
The IELTS Writing Test is probably the most dreaded part of the candidates. While the other parts may seem predictable, the type of writing you need to write in an IELTS essay is very different. An Overview of IELTS Writing Exam
The IELTS writing test will be different for those students taking an academic or general test. You have to write letters in the general exam, but you have to write essays in the academic exam. Today we will focus solely on academic testing.
There are two tasks in the IELTS writing test. The first is a “report” on visual data such as a chart or map, while the second is more commonly an essay. You are given one hour to finish both the writing tasks 1 and task 2. The former requires you to write 150 words, and the latter requires you to write at least 250. It is suggested that you should spend 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2.

Let’s look at both parts of the test in more detail.
IELTS Writing Task 1
This part of the writing test is referred to as the “report” and candidates are required to write a minimum of 150 words describing one of the following;
- Bar graphs
- Line graphs
- Table
- Pie chart
- Flow chart
- Illustration
- Map
While this is considered by many to be the easier of the two writing tasks, it can cause some problems. You should not add any additional information or comment.
Academic Writing task 1
This part of the test is more predictable because you can only encounter so many different types of data. Maps and flow charts are considered the most difficult because they require a different vocabulary and grammar than the others. However, with the right preparation, there is nothing particularly challenging about Task 1. Some teachers recommend that students spend less than the recommended 20 minutes on this task.
IELTS Writing Task 2
The second task is often considered much more difficult than the first, although this is only a subjective opinion. Of course you have to write more and it is worth more than Task 1. In Task 2 you have to write at least 250 words in about 40 minutes. Some instructors recommend writing this section first because it is more valuable than Task 1. However, don’t rely too heavily on this one part of the test. Spending a whole hour here would cost you a lot!

However, the IELTS topics you will be required to write about are quite broad. Sometimes the questions are really very specific and many times I know good students who just couldn’t think of what to say!
