Steps for DIY Countertop Installation

Measure Your Cabinets

Taking measurements is an excellent way to make sure your stone fits perfectly on your countertops. Start by measuring the distance between the wall and the cabinets’ faces. Next, measure the length of the entire wall connecting your cabinet.

Design and Create a Template

Making a countertop template is a more precise method of taking measurements.

  • Take your cardboard and position it over your cabinets. You can use kraft paper or plywood if you don’t have cardboard.
  • On the cardboard, mark the outline of the countertop and carefully trim the outer parts to make a template.
  • ▪ Mark the precise location of your sink, taps, soap dispensers, cooktops, and any additional holes on your template. Be careful to take accurate measurements in order to prevent errors.
  • Select the size and type of overhang you want to use. The standard size is usually 1½ inches. Remember that an overhang size greater than 1½ inches may require support from steel bracing.
  • Countercheck your marking positions and repeat the measuring process for accuracy.

Uninstall the Old Countertop

To remove your old countertop, follow these simple steps:

  • Remove appliances like the range and sink
  • Remove the caulking holding the backsplash in place by scraping it off
  • Scrape out any surplus tiles and the backsplash
  • Disconnect the corner bolts and screws securing the old countertop
  • Slowly remove the old countertop as a single unit. Use a warm moist cloth to soften the adhesive holding the old countertop if it’s sticky.

Align the Cabinets

Verify that the entire length of your cabinets is straight. If it’s not, loosen the base units and align them with shims. Avoid using shims directly under your countertop to avoid damage.

Dry Fit the New Countertop

Place the new countertop directly on top of the cabinet to test if it fits properly. The countertop should comfortably fit and be firmly secured to the wall. If it doesn’t, fix it using either of the following two methods:

Modify the wall

Mark and make a hole where the countertop meets the wall using a utility knife. This is the simplest and least dangerous method of making the countertop fit. It only applies if the wall is drywall.

Adjust the countertop

Modify the countertop stone if the wall is made of strong material, such as tile or concrete.

  • Start by marking the part of the countertop that doesn’t fit.
  • Gently remove the slab from the cabinet, careful not to drop it.
  • Carefully trim the countertop’s sides that don’t fit using a dry-cut diamond blade fitted on an electric grinder. Don’t forget to protect yourself from grit and dust by wearing a mask and safety glasses.

When comfortable with the adjustments, reinstall the slabs and check that all the edges are snugly and firmly attached.

Affix Your New Countertop to the Cabinet

The countertop’s weight is sufficient to hold the stone firmly. However, countertop installation specialists recommend using manufacturer adhesive or caulk.

Apply a caulk drop down the countertop where the stone and the cabinet meet. The best caulk to use is acrylic. Avoid using silicone caulk since it wicks into the stone after some time leading to stains.
